The Components of Your Roofing System and Their Functions

Understanding the different parts of your roofing system will allow you to maintain it better and help you talk to your roofing contractor more effectively. The performance and durability of your roof depends on all of the parts staying in top shape while working with each other.

CQ Construction and Roofing, one of the top roofing contractors in our area, explains more:

Shingles

This is the outer layer of your roofing system. Your shingles serve as your roof’s first line of defense against the weather. They are also the most visible part of your roof, so you need to choose shingles that can complement your home’s architecture and enhance its curb appeal.

Starter Shingles

During a new roof installation, roofers often apply these shingles to the decking. Starter shingles will keep your shingles from getting blown away by strong winds during bad weather. They also fill in the spaces left by the tabs of other shingles, making your roof look better.

Finishing Shingles

This roofing product protects the edges and seams of your roof. For example, the ridge cap is a bent piece that seals the ridges of your roof. As the leading choice for roof repairs and roof replacement in our area, we install high-quality ridge caps that will match your shingles.

Underlayment

Roofing contractors apply underlayment to the decking to provide extra water protection below the shingles and to provide an even and smooth surface for shingle application. It’s also a second layer of protection for your roof. Different roofing materials need different underlayment materials.

Decking – The sheathing or roof deck creates the core surface of your roofing system. It can consist of reinforced concrete, plywood, metal, OSB sheets, or roof pavers. The decking covers the rafters and serves as the base for roof coverings.

Insulation – This is an essential feature if you want your home to be more energy-efficient. A roofing system with insulation will prevent energy from escaping your home, reducing the workload on your HVAC. The best spot for insulation is on the underside of your roof between the support structure.

Support – The support structure keeps your roof together and holds everything up. Metal or timber usually comprises the structure. This part is important because a properly built support structure will withstand whatever weather conditions exist in your area.
